Parking Stops for Parking Lots
Building a parking lot with parking stops will assure that traffic will not allow autos to cross the parking lot in an unsafe way, and keep the flow of traffic moving in the appropriate manner. The parking stops can add to the attraction of the lot, especially if they are made of recycled plastic. With the reduced space used, recycled plastic parking stops are usually bright and very visible, dropping the potential for tripping that concrete stops may cause when people don’t see them. The colorful stops will add some interest to the lot, especially if planting is added.
One doesn’t typically think of landscaping for a parking lot, yet when it is built into it, it may allow for better overall benefits for the lot owner and the people parking there. A few trees will offer shade for the autos, and make it more comfortable during the summer months, the deep roots of the trees and plants will allow for rain absorption, and using native vegetation will create a wildlife habitat and a more aesthetically pleasing environment.

Parking stops are used effectively at schools and other places where the traffic must go one way and it prohibits crossing the lot. They may also be used as curbing where none exists, and to block walkways between cars. The entire lot does not need to be covered in parking stops, but used effectively can direct traffic, both pedestrian and vehicles.
Standards for Parking Stops
In the design and building of a parking lot, a municipality and possibly the developer of the property will set the guidelines for using parking stops. The ADA also has standards for the accessible parking spots that are found in most lots. Whenever preparing a design and a plan to include parking stops, be sure to check with the appropriate parties to assure that it is built to their codes.
