Buffy the Vampire Slayer Locations: Sunnydale $9.8 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Sunnydale, California, is the fictional setting for the U.S. television drama Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Series creator Joss Whedon conceived the town as a representation of a generic California city, as well as a narrative parody of the all-too-serene towns typical in traditional horror movies. Sunnydale is located on a “Hellmouth”; a portal “between this reality and the next”, and convergence point of mystical energies. Sunnydale’s size and surroundings are implausible but justified given its origins to sustain a human population for supernatural evils to prey upon. The town’s founder spared no expense to attract a populace, and Sunnydale thus contains many elements of a large city which the show’s writers utilized fully for comic effect and narrative convenience. During the first three seasons, Sunnydale is shown to have 38,500 inhabitants, very few high schools, forty-three churches, a small private college, a zoo, a museum, and one modest main street. Even so, it has twelve gothic cemeteries. These cemeteries are so heavily used that services are sometimes held at night. In later seasons it is revealed that Sunnydale contains a campus of the University of California system, as well as a profitable magic supply shop. The town is also seen to include a large park containing a creek and a lake, and one of its cemeteries is shown to be adjacent to a lake. Sunnydale has a number of parks: Weatherly Park, Glebe Park, Radcliff Park and Nelson Park are just some of the examples. Sunnydale has a train station, a bus station, a small airport, and a small military base. Directly beneath Sunnydale High School is a Hellmouth, a subterranean, mystical portal that attracts evil forces. This functions as a major plot device in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a… More: |

By her early teens, she began drifting towards Romance titles, and then away from comics altogether until college, where she studied Philosophy and Creative Writing. Finding comics including Steve Gerber’s Howard the Duck a welcome diversion from – if ultimately not a polar opposite to – “Plato, Bertrand Russell and Immanuel Kant,” she found herself pulled back into the world of comics. Frequenting the comic shop called “The ComicShop” (owned by Ken Witcher and Ron Norton) in Vancouver, British Columbia, she ultimately dropped out of graduate Philosophy (with an undergraduate degree in Creative Writing) to move (in 1978) from being one of the ComicShop’s few female customers to being one of its few “counterpeople,” where she says she found herself “learn social skills I never learned in the ivory tower of academia.” Witcher, Norton and The ComicShop swiftly proved able sources for Diana to discover comics including “Barry Windsor-Smith’s “Conan”; Jim Starlin’s “Captain Marvel”; Craig Russell’s Killraven; Dave Sim’s “Cerebus”, of which she was… More: |

The film, produced on a $50,000 budget, was shot in five days, and shares many of the low-budget filmmaking aesthetics commonly associated with Corman’s work. Written by Charles B. Griffith , the film is a dark comic satire about a socially awkward young busboy at a Bohemian café who is acclaimed as a brilliant sculptor when he accidentally kills his landlady’s cat and covers its body in clay to hide the evidence. When he is pressured to create similar work, he becomes murderous . A Bucket of Blood was the first of three collaborations between Corman and Griffith in the comedy genre, followed by The Little Shop of Horrors and Creature from the Haunted Sea . Show Business Terms: Deadpan $10.37 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Deadpan is a form of comic delivery in which humour is presented without a change in emotion or body language, usually speaking in a casual, monotone or very serious, solemn, matter-of-fact voice and expressing an unflappably calm, archly insincere or artificially grave demeanor. The term “deadpan” first emerged as an adjective or adverb in the 1920s, as a compound word combining “dead” and “pan” (a slang term for the face). It was first recorded as a noun in Vanity Fair in 1927; a dead pan was thus ‘a face or facial expression displaying no emotion, animation, or humour’. The verb deadpan ‘to speak, act, or utter in a deadpan manner; to maintain a dead pan’ rose in the early 40s. It stems from journalism rather than theatre. Today its use is especially common in humour from the United Kingdom, Ireland, United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. It is also very much appreciated in France, South Africa and Finland. Many popular American sitcoms also use deadpan expressions, most notably Arrested Development and Seinfeld. Dry humour is often confused with highbrow or egghead humour. Although these forms of humour are often dry, the term dry humour actually only refers to the method of delivery, not necessarily the content. A subtype of deadpan is deadpan violence. Deadpan violence is used to describe a sentence, group of sentences, phrase or action that involves someone threatening or reacting to violence in an unemotional, detached way that comes across as jaded and blasé. This may be done to create a comic effect, by being out of place and in an unrealistic context. A classic example of deadpan violence as humour occurs in one of the variations on Monty Python’s skit “Cheese Shop”. After a long and civil discussion, Mousebender tells t… More: |
