San Diego Comic-Con Disney Animation Panel   by Undercoverfanboy

Honestly, the only reason I was sitting in this panel at San Diego Comic-Con was to be sure I got a seat for the Star Wars “Crap-tacular” panel that was later. Being born in Orlando, The Land of the Mouse, I can usually pick up on bits of news before most. Apparently, Pixar and Disney Animation Studios now both fall under John Lassiter. I missed when that happened; but it’s definitely a step in the right direction to get Disney back on the Aladdin and Lion King path.

At the panel, Lassiter was quick to state that he is committed to bringing back traditional, hand drawn animation as well as continue to push the boundaries of CGI. He also announced that Disney Animation will be bringing back the music and songs that so many of us grew up with in Disney films. The first picture out of the gate under the new regime will be The Princess and the Frog. Taking the classic fairy tale and mixing it with New Orleans during the Jazz Age. Voodoo, gators, bayous and the beautiful setting of the French Quarter will make for another instant classic. Lassiter also showed two different clips, with one being a full musical number combing voodoo and jazz together. They’ve gone All Out on the voice cast as well: Oprah Winfrey, Terrence Howard, Keith David, John Goodman and Anika Noni Rose (Dreamgirls) as the voice of Princess Tiana. Look for The Princess and the Frog to open December 11 of this year.

The next bit of business was to announce (actually, “re-announce”…) that Disney/Pixar will be re-releasing Toy Story and Toy Story 2 as a 3D double feature. He also showed the official trailer for Toy Story 3 in 3D. The entire original voice cast has returned and Toy Story 3 is due to open June 18, 2010 (wow, 2010 is going to be nuts for movies…).

Lassiter then brought out the director of Beauty and the Beast to announce that Disney would be re-releasing the movie in 3D as well. I know this was a beloved movie, but c’mon! You give Beauty and the Beast the 3D treatment?!? There’s barely any action! Aladdin should have been the first choice. Yes, Beauty and the Beast was nominated for an Oscar, but I didn’t think it was any better than The Little Mermaid. Was it a technological breakthrough for animation? Yes, but I think the Academy was throwing Disney a bone.

Next on stage was the director of Ponyo, Hayao Miyazaki. The crowd went nuckin’ futs. You would have thought that someone had shown a Twilight clip. Miyazaki has created the anime favorites Howl’s Moving Castle, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Kiki’s Delivery Service and My Neighbor Totoro. All good movies, but I personally don’t think Ponyo will be anywhere near the marvelous Howl’s Moving Castle. I also don’t think that his animation has been very groundbreaking over the last few years. I mean Jack Kirby and Stan Lee created a lot of good stuff, but in their later years – they were left behind. I think that’s happening to Miyazaki. He’s in a rut. The “look” he has is good enough, so why change it (although the way the animators drew the ocean as jumping fish was pretty cool…). After showing a few clips from Ponyo (and dealing with a horrible translator for Miyazaki…) San Diego Comic-Con presented him with their “Ink Pot” Award for Excellence.

Lassiter also hinted at another fairy tale movie that Pixar and Disney Animation Studios would be working on, Rapunzel. We were only shown some roughs and character sheets, but I think it will be better than The Princess and the Frog. Starting out as traditional animation, but then created with Pixar’s CGI, Rapunzel looks incredible. Rapunzel is rumored to be in theatres December 2010.
